I'm so honored to have been asked by Lee to create the "Be Yoga Strong" painting and logo. It is such a great foundation, and I believe yoga is wonderful for everyone.
Lee came to me with his vision and description of his dream. He showed me a picture of a glowing tree that he "kind of" liked, but he wanted me to have artistic freedom. For an artist, that is awesome but also a bit scary.
I chose to paint on a wooden canvas because I wanted as many earthly elements that I could get into the artwork. I then painted the sun, moon and mountains. Tree pose is the "root" of the painting, and it was a lot of fun (and freeing) letting it grow. Originally, I had planned on writing around the canvas in the white painted frame, but the tree branches and roots took over and i didn't want to inhibit their growth. No restrictions.
An element I was missing was water. My style is more whimsical, so perspective is not always easy for me. Thank goodness my son, Griffin, is great with landscapes. He helped with the waterfall and the pond, where I later added the lotus flowers.
Finally, I was ready to sign (which I only do when I feel completely finished), but I just kept feeling something was missing. This painting kept telling me to light it up. Not sure if it was because of the glowing picture Lee had shared with me or just because I knew it would look really cool in a dark yoga studio?
Thankfully, Lee was very pleased (always a relief!) I feel extremely proud to be just a small part of such a great foundation. Be Yoga Strong is bringing in people of all ages, shapes, sizes, colors and histories. Lee teaches a beautiful class. It is also art.
